About Specio

Nitrogen isn't new. Measuring it on site is.

We are a Portuguese deep-tech company turning more than 25 years of electrochemical sensor research into a simple field tool for the people who manage water.

Our company, our brand

Specio, a Nitrogen Sensing Solutions company.

The companyNitrogen Sensing Solutions

Nitrogen Sensing Solutions (NS2) is the company behind Specio. Founded in 2019, it draws on more than 25 years of electrochemical sensor research to make lab-grade nitrogen measurement possible on site, where the water is.

The sensing technology inside every Specio test was developed and refined by the NS2 team — an electrochemical platform built for fresh and salt water and validated against certified laboratory methods.

Our North American businessSpecio Analytics

Specio Analytics is our North American business, launching officially in January 2027. It brings the Specio platform to customers across the United States and Canada.

Through our North American operation, customers get the same lab-grade nitrite answers on site — with local support for pilots, partnerships and everyday use.

Decades of field testing. So what’s changed?

Fish farmers, lake managers and treatment plant operators have measured nitrogen in the field for decades. Many good companies sell tools to do it. So why Specio, and why now?

What came before

  • Color test kits

Affordable, but results depend on the eye of the person reading them.

  • Ion-selective probes

Fast, but they foul, drift and need frequent calibration.

  • UV optical sensors

Continuous, but costly, and they report nitrate and nitrite together.

  • Certified labs

The gold standard, but results take days.

What's changed

Biology that survives the field

Enzyme sensors have always been highly specific, but too fragile and too sensitive to oxygen to leave the lab. Specio's patent-pending oxygen-scavenger approach and stabilized enzymes deliver nitrite-specific readings in real water: salty, murky or fresh.

A lab instrument in your pocket

Mass-produced printed electrodes, miniature electronics and the smartphone have shrunk the analyzer to the size of your hand. It is the glucose-meter model, applied to water.

The result: a specific nitrogen answer, on site, in minutes, at a cost that makes frequent testing practical.

Vision

Every water decision made with clear nitrogen data.

Mission

Give the people who manage water fast, specific nitrogen measurements on site, so they can act before problems become crises.

Our commitment to customers
  • We tell you exactly what we measure today, and what is still in development.
  • We validate our results against certified lab methods.
  • We work alongside your lab and your sensors, not against them.
  • Your data is yours: export it anytime.
  • Our pilots shape our roadmap, so we listen first.
